Amazon CEO Warns AI Will Replace Corporate Jobs
Seattle – Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has told employees that artificial intelligence will reduce the company’s corporate workforce in the coming years, citing “efficiency gains” from AI adoption.
In an internal memo sent Tuesday, Jassy urged staff to “be curious about AI” while acknowledging that automation would transform roles across the company.
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” Jassy wrote. “And more people doing other types of jobs.”
The remarks come as Amazon accelerates AI deployment “in virtually every corner of the company,” including logistics, customer service, retail, and advertising. Jassy said half a million Amazon sellers are already using AI tools, while advertisers are increasingly adopting the company’s AI-powered platforms.
Amazon employs over 1.5 million people globally, with roughly 350,000 in office roles. It is the second-largest U.S. employer after Walmart.
The memo adds to growing concerns over AI-driven job losses, especially in white-collar sectors. Experts like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton have warned that AI could eliminate a large share of entry-level office jobs.
Jassy, however, suggested employees who adapt to AI will be “well-positioned” for Amazon’s future.
