Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer addressed recent criticism surrounding the Harris-Walz campaign’s price-gouging plan, asserting that people are “reading too much” into its specifics. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Whitmer, who co-chairs the Democrats’ campaign, defended Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic agenda amid growing backlash from political opponents and pundits.

Whitmer’s Defense of the Price-Gouging Plan

Whitmer argued that the plan’s critics are overlooking its broader objectives, which include making housing and healthcare more affordable. “We know that Kamala Harris is going to be focused on building up more affordable housing,” Whitmer said. She emphasized Harris’s past successes in expanding healthcare access, specifically protecting the Affordable Care Act, which currently benefits a million people in Michigan. Whitmer also criticized former President Donald Trump’s attempts to dismantle these gains, stating that it would only increase costs for Americans.

Addressing Claims of “Gimmicks”

The Washington Post editorial board recently labeled the price-gouging plan as “gimmicks,” but Whitmer pushed back, highlighting Harris’s commitment to consumer protection and corporate responsibility. “I think it speaks to Kamala Harris’s values that she wants consumers to keep more money in their pockets,” Whitmer remarked. She acknowledged the need for business growth but stressed the importance of preventing corporate exploitation of consumers for profit.

The Bigger Picture

Whitmer concluded by affirming that any effort to help Americans keep more money is worth pursuing. “You know what? I think that any effort we make to keep more money in Americans’ pockets is worth walking the path and having the conversations,” she said. Whitmer’s comments suggest that the Harris-Walz campaign remains committed to policies aimed at economic fairness, despite the criticism.
