US Man Finds $20, Buys Lottery Ticket, and Wins $1 Million Jackpot
New Delhi — For Jerry Hicks, a master carpenter from Banner Elk, North Carolina, a $20 bill on the ground turned into a life-changing moment. On October 22, as he headed to a convenience store in Boone, Hicks spotted a $20 bill lying outside the Speedway on N.C. 105. This unexpected find led him to buy a lottery ticket—and ultimately to a $1 million win.
“I found $20 in the parking lot,” Hicks recalled, sharing his unexpected stroke of luck. “I used that to buy the ticket.” Despite not finding his first-choice ticket, he opted for an Extreme Cash scratch-off instead, a choice that would soon reveal a million-dollar prize.
A Jackpot Win and Life-Altering Choices
Hicks was presented with two options for his winnings: he could choose to receive an annuity of $50,000 per year over 20 years, or take a lump sum of $600,000. Opting for the latter, he received $429,007 after state and federal taxes.
After working as a carpenter for 56 years, Hicks sees this win as an opportunity to retire comfortably and support his family. “I want to help my children,” he explained, and his next move to celebrate? A hearty meal. “We are going to head straight to Golden Corral and eat everything they've got,” he joked.
Hicks’s story serves as a reminder of life’s unexpected turns, turning a simple $20 bill on the ground into a retirement plan and a new beginning for him and his family.
