Donald Trump Plans to End Birthright Citizenship

Table of Contents

President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to eliminate birthright citizenship, a policy enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Trump, who assumes office on January 20, 2025, called the practice "ridiculous" and vowed to end it.

The 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone born in the United States, regardless of their parents’ nationality. Trump argues this policy has been misused through practices like "birth tourism," where people travel to the U.S. specifically to have children who will gain citizenship.

The move could have far-reaching effects, particularly on communities like Indian-Americans. According to Pew Research, 1.6 million Indian-Americans born in the U.S. could be impacted by this change.

However, experts note that altering the Constitution would require significant legal steps, including Congressional approval. Critics also doubt Trump’s ability to implement the plan, as similar attempts during his first presidency did not progress.

Legal analysts warn that eliminating birthright citizenship could lead to widespread issues for families trying to prove their children's citizenship. For now, the 14th Amendment remains intact, and any attempt to change it would face serious legal challenges.
