Travis Head Blasts 30 Runs in an Over as Australia Thrashes England in T20I Opener

Table of Contents

In a display of devastating batting, Travis Head lit up the first T20I between Australia and England in Southampton, hammering Sam Curran for 30 runs in a single over. Head’s assault featured three boundaries and three enormous sixes, putting Australia in firm control during the early stages of their innings.

Head’s onslaught began after a relatively quiet start. It took him seven deliveries to find his first boundary, an off drive against Jofra Archer. But once he found his groove, he quickly accelerated, smashing three fours in Archer’s next over to build momentum.

The Carnage Against Sam Curran

However, the real fireworks came in the fifth over, when Head took on Sam Curran. The left-handed opener was merciless, punishing Curran’s short-pitched deliveries with a series of devastating strokes. The over began with a four over mid-on, followed by another through the off-side as Curran struggled to find the right length.

Head then shifted gears, smashing a massive six over deep square leg with a short-arm pull. Curran’s attempt to change his length backfired as Head continued his assault, swinging across the line for another six. He capped off the over with a third consecutive six, this time driving the ball over covers with sheer power and precision. A final one-bounce four brought the over to a close, marking one of the most explosive displays of batting in T20 cricket.

Head’s Half-Century Sparks Australian Dominance

“I’m in good form right now, and it’s nice to take my chances,” said Head, who completed his half-century off just 19 balls. His 59-run knock, featuring eight boundaries and four sixes, was instrumental in giving Australia a strong start alongside Matthew Short, who contributed a quickfire 41 off 26 balls. The pair’s 86-run partnership in the powerplay put England on the back foot early.

Australia’s Middle-Order Collapse

Despite the strong start, Australia’s innings faltered after Head’s dismissal. England’s spinners, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone, slowed the run rate significantly, sparking a collapse that saw Australia lose eight wickets for just 61 runs. From a position of dominance at 118/2 after 10 overs, Australia limped to 179 all out, a score that appeared underwhelming given their early exploits.

England Falters in Run Chase

England’s chase never truly gained momentum. Missing captain Jos Buttler, the hosts struggled from the outset, collapsing to 52-4 within the powerplay. Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran attempted to revive England’s hopes with a 54-run partnership, but their efforts were undone as Australia’s bowlers struck in quick succession.

Livingstone top-scored for England with 37, while Curran added 18, but their dismissals sparked another collapse. England lost three wickets in the space of 10 balls, falling to 113-7. Australia’s fielding was also top-notch, with Tim David's acrobatic diving catch to remove Jordan Cox particularly impressive. England was eventually bowled out for 151, handing Australia a comfortable 28-run victory.

What’s Next in the Series?

With Australia now 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series, England will look to regroup ahead of the second match in Cardiff. They will be hoping for the return of Jos Buttler for the upcoming ODI series, but for now, they face a daunting challenge against an in-form Australian team. The third T20I is set to take place in Manchester, where England will need to find a way to counter the relentless form of Travis Head and the Aussies.
