South Korean Train Operator’s 4-Minute Toilet Break Causes Delays for 125 Trains
A four-minute toilet break by a South Korean train conductor earlier this week caused delays for 125 trains in Seoul, highlighting the challenges faced by transport workers under high-pressure schedules. The incident occurred on Monday at 8 a.m. on Seoul Metro’s Line 2, one of the busiest subway lines in the city.
The conductor operating a train on the outer loop made an unscheduled stop at a station and rushed to a restroom located on another floor. The entire process took 4 minutes and 16 seconds, during which the train remained stationary. This brief pause set off a chain reaction, with subsequent trains delayed by as much as 20 minutes, according to Seoul Metro.
Challenges of a One-Man System
Conductors on Seoul’s circular subway lines typically work for two to three hours without breaks. While portable toilets are available for emergencies, many staff members are forced to seek restrooms far from platforms, especially in urgent situations.
Social media users were quick to react to the news, sparking debates about labour rights and workplace conditions. Comments called for better policies, with one user writing, "A train operator shouldn’t have to choose between personal health and public punctuality."
Another commenter criticized the one-man system, stating, "This shows the unrealistic expectations placed on workers. Proper staffing would prevent such issues."
Growing Calls for Improved Labour Rights
The incident comes as nearly 70,000 workers, including railway and subway staff, prepare for a general strike next month. The strike, led by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), aims to demand better working conditions and address workplace discrimination.
Seoul Metro, while acknowledging the delays, assured passengers that the impact was minimized and most commuters faced only minor inconveniences. However, the incident underscores the need for better systems to ensure both passenger convenience and employee welfare.
The event serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by frontline workers and the importance of balancing efficiency with humane working conditions.
