Dusanka Filipovic

Dusanka Filipovic stands as one of the most influential sustainability-driven engineering leaders shaping the intersection of healthcare, clean technology, and circular economy innovation. A licensed Professional Engineer in Chemical Engineering with more than three decades of experience, she has consistently positioned herself at the forefront of environmental impact solutions, transforming industries that traditionally operated with little accountability for atmospheric emissions.

Born in Yugoslavia and later building her career in Canada, Filipovic broke barriers early in her professional journey. She became the first female professional engineer employed by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Canada Inc., establishing a precedent for women in heavy industry and chemical engineering leadership. Over the years, she expanded her expertise across global business development, cleantech commercialization, and environmental technology deployment, working with major corporations including Union Carbide (now Honeywell), Halozone Technologies (now GFL Environmental), and Energy and Environmental Research (EER, now GE).

Her early innovation work addressed one of the most pressing environmental crises of the late 20th century: chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFCs). She co-developed a method to reclaim CFCs and other halogenated hydrocarbon compounds, substances known to severely damage the ozone layer, where a single CFC molecule can destroy up to 100,000 ozone molecules. Recognizing the urgency and commercial potential of responsible recovery systems, she founded Halozone Technologies Inc. in 1991 to commercialize what became known as the “Blue Bottle” technology. The company earned U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certification in 1994, reinforcing its technical and regulatory credibility.

Her leadership trajectory continued upward when she became President of Canada’s Energy and Environmental Research Corporation (CanadEER Ltd.) in 1997, focusing on air pollution emissions reduction technologies and further strengthening her authority in environmental engineering.

However, it was her founding of Blue-Zone Technologies Ltd. in 1999 that positioned her as a global sustainability pioneer in healthcare. As co-inventor of Blue-Zone’s Cradle to Cradle® anesthetic recovery technology, Filipovic addressed a largely overlooked environmental issue: the release of waste anesthetic gases into the atmosphere. Traditionally, up to 95% of administered anesthetic gases are vented, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Her innovation created a system capable of safely capturing, isolating, purifying, and reintroducing anesthetic gases into the supply chain, effectively transforming a waste stream into a renewable pharmaceutical resource.

Under her leadership as Founder, President, CEO, and later Vice-Chair, Blue-Zone evolved from a lab-scale concept into a recognized global cleantech pharmaceutical company. She raised over $30 million in growth capital, secured 17 international patents and 23 trademarks, and led two major government-funded projects. The company successfully completed Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) and Ontario Innovation Demonstration Fund projects, secured multi-year healthcare contracts, and established the first U.S. federal contract for waste anesthetic capture, demonstrating measurable carbon emission reduction and public health co-benefits.

A defining milestone during her tenure was achieving first-in-industry Health Canada DEL, NOC, and DIN approvals for anesthetic gases produced via isolation rather than traditional synthesis, marking a regulatory breakthrough for circular pharmaceutical manufacturing. This not only validated the science but redefined sustainability within pharmaceutical production frameworks.

In addition to her executive leadership, Filipovic has founded InnoPath Advisory and InnoPath Academy, where she mentors innovators and early-stage ventures, leveraging decades of lived experience in scaling market-driven, impact-focused enterprises. 

Her advisory work reflects her commitment to guiding the next generation of cleantech founders through complex regulatory, capital-raising, and commercialization pathways.

Her contributions have earned prestigious recognitions, including the Manning Principal Award (1993), the New Pioneers Award (1994), the Engineering Medal for Distinguished Engineering Achievement from Professional Engineers of Ontario, and the Sustainability Champion Award from the Canadian Coalition for Green Healthcare.
