The infrastructure behind the next generation of artificial intelligence is being shaped long before a GPU begins processing its first workload. North A. Caselman, Founder and CEO of 3 Data Centers, has spent nearly three decades preparing for precisely this kind of challenge. A United States Marine Corps veteran and Certified Data Center Design Professional (CDCDP), North has built his career across telecommunications, networking, cybersecurity, data center infrastructure, hyperscale sales, real estate, power development, and strategic deployment. Today, that experience is converging in an ambitious mission: creating data center infrastructure designed for the rapidly changing demands of AI.
His professional foundation was established in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as a small computer systems specialist, working with network administration, cybersecurity, and tactical WAN/LAN environments at Quantico, Virginia. His transition into the civilian sector took him to Global Crossing, where exposure to global networks deepened his understanding of connectivity and the infrastructure required to support it.
Over the years, North’s career evolved alongside the data center industry itself. His experience has included roles with organizations such as Global Crossing, XO Communications, Digital Realty, TierPoint, and DC BLOX, spanning engineering, strategic sales, hyperscale infrastructure, site selection, land development, and data center construction. He also spent approximately 15 years in Silicon Valley and has advised on both the buy and sell sides of transactions, contributing to deals valued in the billions.
Yet it was the changing economics and physical realities of digital infrastructure that ultimately inspired his entrepreneurial direction.
North saw global data center vacancy tightening just as artificial intelligence began creating extraordinary new demand for compute. His involvement in GPU sales exposed another side of the challenge: securing advanced hardware is only part of the equation. An organization may obtain highly sought-after accelerators, but without compliant facilities, sufficient power, appropriate cooling, and deployment-ready infrastructure, that computing capacity cannot deliver its intended value.
That realization helped shape 3 Data Centers, founded in 2026 and headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. Rather than approaching infrastructure as isolated components, North and his team work across the stack, from GPUs and racks to mechanical and electrical systems, power acquisition, land development, and facility delivery. The objective is to reverse-engineer requirements from available power all the way to the server level, creating resilient and concurrently maintainable environments capable of supporting modern computing demands.
The company’s facilities are purpose-built with AI workloads in mind, incorporating both advanced air and liquid cooling technologies. This flexibility is increasingly important as rack densities rise dramatically. As North observes, the traditional model of spreading a megawatt across tens of thousands of square feet is changing; increasingly, enormous amounts of power can be concentrated within only a few racks.
For North, however, infrastructure is ultimately a people business.
His leadership philosophy begins with finding good people and building teams capable of executing under pressure. From there, his priorities are speed to market, technical thoroughness, scalability, and contingency planning across critical-path objectives. It is an approach shaped by years of solving practical infrastructure problems rather than relying on a single established formula.
That mindset is especially relevant when confronting one of today’s most persistent challenges: supply chains. Long lead times for transformers, generators, switchgear, mechanical and electrical equipment, and other essential components can disrupt an otherwise viable project. North emphasizes supplier diversity, industry relationships, and resourcefulness as ways to keep projects moving when conventional procurement paths become constrained.
The company is now pursuing a broader North American platform, with aspirations for more than 20 sites and access to hundreds of megawatts by 2030. Its first wave includes multiple 2–10 MW facilities, while the business is targeting approximately 20 MW of commissioned capacity by the end of 2027. North describes that target as deliberate and achievable rather than growth for growth’s sake.
His outlook on the industry is equally forward-looking. He expects the evolution of increasingly powerful GPU architectures to fundamentally reshape data center design, particularly as thermal densities move beyond what traditional air-only cooling environments can comfortably support. Addressing power generation, delivery, thermal constraints, and infrastructure scarcity will therefore require not only additional capacity but new technologies and faster adoption.
From tactical networks in the Marine Corps to global connectivity, hyperscale infrastructure, and now AI-ready data centers, North Caselman’s career reflects an ability to evolve with technology while remaining grounded in execution. At a moment when digital ambition is increasingly constrained by physical infrastructure, his focus is clear: solve the problems standing between computing potential and real-world deployment.
