Table of Contents

The tiger, one of the most magnificent animals on earth, finds a sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, bringing immense pride to its people. India, home to 3,682 tigers which constitute 75% of the global tiger population, celebrates this International Tiger Day with Madhya Pradesh leading the charge. The state's flourishing tiger population extends beyond the confines of its Tiger Reserves, solidifying its role as a vital haven for these majestic creatures.

Maximum Number of Tigers in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh boasts the highest number of tigers in the country, with the population surging from 526 to an impressive 785. This remarkable increase of 259 tigers over the past 4-5 years surpasses the entire tiger population recorded in 2010. The success is attributed to the relentless efforts of the Forest Department and the unwavering support of the local community, ensuring a nurturing environment for the tiger family to prosper.

Formation of the Tiger State

The journey to establishing Madhya Pradesh as a renowned tiger state is marked by dedicated conservation and awareness efforts. Tiger censuses conducted every four years revealed a significant population growth from 257 in 2010, requiring intensive conservation initiatives. The state's efforts include managing human-wildlife conflict with 16 regional and district-level rescue squads, specialized dog teams for wildlife crime detection, and rewilding orphaned tiger cubs. Over the past eight years, the State Level Strike Force has apprehended 550 wildlife criminals from 14 states, showcasing Madhya Pradesh's commitment to wildlife protection.

Reasons for Becoming a Tiger State

Madhya Pradesh's transformation into a tiger state hinges on four key aspects:

Scientific Relocation of Villages: Between 2010 and 2022, 200 small villages within Tiger Reserves were relocated, with 75 villages moved out of the Satpura Tiger Reserve alone.

Translocation: Species such as reindeer, bison, and wild boar from Kanha were translocated to other tiger reserves, enhancing the food base for tigers.

Habitat Development: Grasslands and ponds were created in abandoned villages and fields within the forests, boosting the population of herbivores and providing ample food for tigers.

Security Overhaul: In Panna Tiger Reserve, drones were utilized for surveying and monitoring, leading to the complete eradication of illegal hunting. Technology was heavily employed in crime investigation and patrolling.

Better Management of National Parks

At the St. Petersburg Tiger Conference in 2010, 13 countries with tiger populations pledged to double the tiger population by 2022. Madhya Pradesh's continuous and progressive improvement measures in tiger management led to a 33% increase in tiger numbers, the highest ever recorded between census cycles. With 526 tigers, Madhya Pradesh surpassed Karnataka and Uttarakhand, becoming a testament to successful wildlife management.

Effective Management and International Recognition

Madhya Pradesh's success in tiger conservation extends to effective management of national parks. The state government displaced over 50 villages, freeing land from biological pressure and expanding wild animal habitats. National parks like Kanha, Pench, and Kuno Palpur have seen significant displacement of villages, enhancing habitat development programs.

The state's national parks and protected areas are recognized for their effective management. Satpura Tiger Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, and the Pench Tiger Reserve ranks highest in the country according to the Effectiveness Assessment Report of the Management of Tiger Reserves.
