Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar made a surprising U-turn after initially criticizing Washington Sundar's inclusion in India's playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand. Gavaskar had voiced his concerns about the decision to replace Kuldeep Yadav with Sundar, calling it a “panic move” following India's heavy loss in the first Test at Bengaluru. However, Sundar’s extraordinary performance on Day 1, where he claimed seven wickets, prompted Gavaskar to change his tune.

After Sundar's standout performance, which put India in a commanding position, Gavaskar praised the team’s selection, remarking during commentary, “What an inspired selection. He is picked in the XI because he can bat a little bit, bowl a little bit.”

Gavaskar’s Initial Criticism

Before the start of the match, Gavaskar was skeptical about the three changes India made, which saw KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj dropped in favor of Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep. Gavaskar expressed his surprise at the selection choices, stating on the broadcast, “It feels like a bit of a panic decision taken by Team India. You do not make three changes to the squad often.”

India’s loss in the first Test, where they were bowled out for just 46 runs in their first innings, seemed to trigger the changes. At the time, Gavaskar believed that picking Sundar was more about strengthening India’s lower-order batting than about his bowling abilities.

A Stunning Performance from Sundar

Despite the early skepticism, Washington Sundar’s inclusion paid off as he tore through New Zealand's batting lineup, picking up a remarkable seven wickets. Gavaskar, impressed by the all-rounder’s bowling performance, quickly acknowledged the value of the decision, shifting his earlier stance. He recognized that Sundar's ability to both bat and bowl made him a valuable asset for the team.

The Road Ahead for India

With India trailing the series 0-1 after losing the first Test, Sundar’s contribution is a significant boost to the team’s chances of leveling the series. His performance not only silenced critics but also proved that Team India’s strategy to bring him into the side was a calculated and ultimately successful move.

As India pushes to even the score in the three-match series, Sundar’s all-round abilities could continue to play a critical role in their quest for victory.
