Sanju Samson Makes History: First Indian to Score Consecutive T20I Hundreds
Sanju Samson etched his name in cricketing history on Friday by becoming the first Indian batter to score two consecutive T20I hundreds. This remarkable feat came during India’s first T20I against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban. Samson’s innings of 107 off just 50 balls was a spectacle of power hitting and skill, featuring seven boundaries and 10 towering sixes. He reached his century in a mere 47 balls, showcasing his aggressive intent and precise shot-making.
A Record-Breaking Innings
Samson’s innings was a continuation of his stellar form, following his previous T20I century against Bangladesh in Hyderabad last month. With this knock, he joined the exclusive club of batters who have scored consecutive T20I hundreds, becoming the fourth player globally to achieve this milestone, after Gustav Mckeon (France), Rilee Rossouw (South Africa), and Phil Salt (England).
In addition to the milestone, Samson’s 107 became the highest individual score in an India vs South Africa T20I match, surpassing David Miller’s unbeaten 106 in Guwahati in 2022. His 10 sixes also set a new record for most sixes in a T20I clash between the two nations, overtaking the previous record of eight held by Rilee Rossouw and Suryakumar Yadav.
Propelling India to a Competitive Total
Thanks to Samson’s explosive performance, India posted a formidable 202/8 in their allotted 20 overs. This marked the seventh time in 2024 that the Men in Blue have surpassed the 200-run mark in T20Is, equaling their record from 2023.
Speaking at the innings break, Samson reflected on his innings with a sense of fulfillment. “I was in a zone, it was automatically flowing, so I let it flow,” said the Kerala-born batter. On being asked about his mindset at the crease, he remarked, “It’s a good question actually, if the ball is there to be hit, go for it. Focus on one ball at a time and that helps.”
Cherishing a Decade-Long Wait
Samson’s journey to this moment has been marked by perseverance and hard work. “If I think a lot I will get emotional. I waited for this moment for 10 years,” he said. Samson expressed his gratitude for finally achieving a significant milestone in his career but noted the importance of staying grounded. “I’m very happy, grateful, and blessed. But I would like to keep my feet on the ground, be in the moment and enjoy,” he concluded.
His innings not only bolstered India’s total but set a benchmark for future T20I performances, solidifying Samson’s position as one of India’s premier T20 players.
