Russia Warns US of Escalation Over Ukraine But Vows to Keep Dialogue Open

Moscow: Russia issued a stern warning to the United States on Wednesday, urging it to halt what it described as a "spiral of escalation" over the Ukraine conflict. Despite heightened tensions, Moscow emphasized its commitment to maintaining open communication channels with Washington to avoid "dangerous mistakes."

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov highlighted the precarious situation during a statement, stressing the need for restraint in U.S. military support to Ukraine. "The signal is very clear—stop encouraging Kyiv toward dangerous military actions. This spiral of escalation must end, or it will pose a grave threat to everyone, including the United States," Ryabkov said, as reported by Russian state media.

Missile Test Sparks Concerns

Ryabkov’s remarks follow Russia's recent launch of the Oreshnik, a new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile, which Moscow claimed was in response to Ukraine's deployment of U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles. President Vladimir Putin described the missile test as a "clear message" to the West against further military support for Kyiv.

The Oreshnik missile, reportedly reaching speeds of 13,600 km/h (8,450 mph), has been condemned by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a severe escalation in the ongoing war. Zelenskyy called for global denunciation of Russia's actions, labeling the missile use as dangerous and provocative.

The U.S. military, however, characterized the Oreshnik as experimental, noting that Russia likely has only a few of the missiles in its arsenal.

Open Channels Amid Tensions

While the Kremlin maintained that it was not obligated to inform the U.S. about the missile launch, given its intermediate range, it voluntarily provided 30 minutes' notice. "This action underscores our commitment to avoiding dangerous miscalculations," Ryabkov said, urging the U.S. to adopt a similar stance in the interest of global stability.

The Kremlin has also reiterated its efforts to avoid nuclear miscalculations. Ryabkov noted, "We hope these measures will help mitigate risks and reduce the potential for catastrophic errors in the current volatile environment."

Strategic Nuclear Development

In parallel, Russia is continuing work on deploying its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, a critical component of its strategic nuclear arsenal. Designed to carry nuclear warheads over long distances, the Sarmat program has faced delays and setbacks. In September, a test failure reportedly left a deep crater at the launch site, raising concerns about the missile's reliability.

As geopolitical tensions over Ukraine persist, Moscow’s dual approach of issuing stern warnings while maintaining communication reflects the precarious balance in global diplomacy. Both sides face mounting pressure to manage the conflict without further escalation.
