Brisbane,  One of India’s most celebrated cricketers, R Ashwin, announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday. The 38-year-old spinner revealed his decision following the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, which ended in a draw.

Ashwin, known for his unmatched bowling skill and sharp cricketing mind, concluded his career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with an impressive tally of 537 wickets in 106 matches. Speaking at a joint press conference with skipper Rohit Sharma, Ashwin stated, “Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer.” The spinner declined to take questions and left after delivering the emotional message.

A Cricketing Genius

Ashwin was a key figure in India’s dominance in Test cricket from 2014 to 2019, particularly excelling in home conditions. His ability to turn games with both ball and bat earned him respect worldwide. His contributions include winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Across formats, Ashwin took 765 wickets, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket, behind Anil Kumble.

White-Ball Record and IPL Future

In ODIs, Ashwin played 113 matches, securing 156 wickets with best figures of 4/25. His T20I career saw him take 72 wickets in 65 matches at an average of 23.22. While retiring from international cricket, Ashwin will continue to feature in T20 leagues and represent Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025.

Ashwin’s exit leaves behind a void, but his immense legacy serves as inspiration for the next generation of Indian cricketers.
