PSNI Warns Public to Avoid Cliff Diving: Leave It to the Professionals
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has issued a stern warning to the public not to emulate professional cliff divers after two individuals found themselves in danger off the north coast. Superintendent Mark Roberts of the Causeway Coast and Glens Policing District reported receiving multiple calls about people diving from cliffs near Dunluce Castle on Thursday evening. These incidents occurred after a practice session by professional divers for the upcoming Red Bull Cliff Diving Series in Ballycastle.

Incident Details
Speaking to BBC News NI, Superintendent Roberts noted that two individuals required assistance from the water after attempting the dangerous dives post-practice session. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series emphasized in a statement that their competitors are highly trained professionals, cautioning against the severe risks involved in such stunts.
"The impact of hitting the water after up to 27 meters of free fall is nine times harder than jumping from a 10-meter tower," the statement read. "If you are not perfectly trained and experienced, you risk your life."

Safety Concerns
Superintendent Roberts expressed concerns that onlookers might be tempted to try cliff diving themselves, unaware of the extensive preparations and safety measures involved. He highlighted the importance of understanding the depth of the water, the tides, and potential hidden dangers beneath the surface.
“After the event took place last night, we received a number of calls about people diving from the cliffs in the area," said Supt Roberts. "Two of them had to be assisted by the Red Bull Team. The concern is that people will see the cliff divers and be attracted to give it a go themselves without realizing how much goes into making it a safe event.”
Professional Event in Ballycastle
Crowds are anticipated along the north coast on Saturday to witness professional divers compete in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, marking the event's debut in Northern Ireland. Competitors will dive from a man-made platform at heights of 27 meters for men and 21 meters for women near Ballycastle Harbour.

Numerous safety measures are in place, including safety divers in the water and standby boats during the dives. Cliff divers are judged on criteria similar to Olympic standards, including technique, synchronization of rotations and twists, clean lines, and water entry.
Superintendent Roberts concluded, "The best advice I can give to people who have no experience cliff diving is to leave it to the professionals."
