Polling Underway in Jammu and Kashmir for Phase 2 of Assembly Elections
The second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections took place on September 25, 2024, with polling in 26 constituencies spread across six districts. This election is significant as it is the first since the region's statehood and special status were removed five years ago. Over 2.5 million voters are deciding the fate of 239 candidates. Prominent candidates include Omar Abdullah contesting from two seats and BJP's Ravinder Raina defending his seat in Rajouri. Despite the volatile history of the region, security arrangements have been tightened to ensure a peaceful voting process. The campaign largely focused on the abrogation of Article 370, restoration of statehood, and dialogue with Pakistan.
