Mukesh Chhabra on Why Ranbir Kapoor Was Chosen to Play Lord Rama in Ramayana
Ranbir Kapoor is set to take on the role of Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming mythological drama Ramayana. While an official announcement is yet to be made, the film's shoot has already begun. Sai Pallavi will star alongside Kapoor as Sita. In a recent interview, casting director Mukesh Chhabra shed light on the decision to cast Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama.
Speaking on The Ranveer Show podcast, Chhabra explained that Ranbir Kapoor was chosen for the role because of the calmness and serenity he exudes. He said, “Uske chehre pe calmness hai, woh toh chahiye thi na… Nitesh (Tiwari) ne bahot pehle hi soch lia tha unko. Ye bahot sahi decision hai. Wo aapko maloom chalega film aane ke baad." (He has a calmness on his face. It was needed for the film. Nitesh Tiwari thought about casting him quite early on. It’s a great decision, and the audience will realize this after watching the film.)
To keep details under wraps, the film’s sets have been covered from all directions, and shooting is taking place indoors to prevent leaks. Despite these precautions, some images of Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi’s looks from the film were captured by shutterbugs. The production team, led by producer Namit Malhotra, has since tightened security and implemented a no-phone policy on set. The working title of Ramayana is reportedly ‘God Power’.
The project, however, is not without its challenges. A legal dispute over intellectual property rights has arisen, with Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP claiming primary rights over the project, which are contested by Prime Focus Technologies Limited. Despite this, work on the film continues, although the shoot might extend beyond the initially planned schedule. Nevertheless, this delay is unlikely to affect the production timeline of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War, which stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal and is set to begin shooting in November.
In addition to Ramayana and Love and War, Ranbir Kapoor is also involved in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal Park and is rumored to collaborate with Vikrant Massey on Rajkumar Hirani’s next project, though no official confirmation has been made.
