India’s 23-year-old shooting sensation, Manu Bhaker, has been chosen to carry the national flag at the Paris 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony, scheduled for August 11. Bhaker’s remarkable achievements at the Games, where she secured two bronze medals, have made her the perfect choice to represent India as the flag-bearer.

Bhaker’s Emotional Message

Manu Bhaker shared her excitement after being selected, calling the opportunity “a truly humbling” experience. "Leading the Indian contingent with the tricolour in my hands with millions around the world watching is a privilege I will cherish forever," Bhaker said on social media. She expressed her gratitude to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the honour, adding that this recognition was a source of immense pride for her.

A Stellar Olympic Performance

At Paris 2024, Bhaker made her second appearance at the Olympics and made history by winning two medals, becoming the first Indian woman to achieve this in shooting. She earned her first bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event, marking India's return to the Olympic shooting podium after a long gap since London 2012. In addition, she secured a second bronze alongside Sarabjot Singh in the 10m air pistol mixed event. Bhaker’s contribution to India's medal tally has been invaluable, and her performance solidified her as one of the top Indian athletes at these Games.

India’s Growing Olympic Legacy

India’s tradition of having celebrated athletes carry the flag at the Olympics continues with Bhaker. Wrestler Bajrang Punia served as the flag-bearer at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, while PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal carried the flag during the Opening Ceremony at Paris 2024.

A Dominant Shooting Team

India’s shooting contingent has been the country’s standout performers at the Paris Olympics. Along with Bhaker’s two bronze medals, Swapnil Kusale also brought home a bronze in the men’s 50m three-position rifle event. The shooting team’s achievements have propelled India’s success at the Games, with all three medals so far coming from the sport.

Awaiting the Male Flag-Bearer Announcement

While Bhaker has been named the female flag-bearer for the Closing Ceremony, the IOA is yet to announce the male flag-bearer. Regardless, Bhaker’s selection adds a significant chapter to her already impressive Olympic journey and will be a moment of pride for all of India as she leads the nation’s athletes in the closing parade.
