Israel Targets Beirut in Escalating Hezbollah Conflict

Table of Contents

On October 4, 2024, Israeli forces intensified their military operations in Lebanon, launching a series of airstrikes aimed at Hezbollah strongholds, including a significant hit on Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters in Beirut. The strike targeted senior Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine, who is expected to succeed the late Hassan Nasrallah, killed earlier this week. Lebanese health officials confirmed that 37 people were killed and 151 injured in the attacks.

Israel's escalation includes the use of ground forces along its northern border, engaging in fierce clashes with Hezbollah militants, which resulted in nine Israeli casualties. Israeli forces have issued warnings to evacuate southern Lebanon, signaling a possible ground offensive. This is only the second time central Beirut has been targeted since the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

International calls for restraint have increased, with the United Nations urging a ceasefire. However, Israel continues its push to dismantle Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed support for Israel but urged “proportionality” in its response, while emphasizing that Israel should avoid striking Iran’s oil or nuclear facilities.

The conflict has resulted in over 1.2 million displaced people in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, is set to deliver a rare public sermon in Tehran today, a signal of Iran's deep involvement in the conflict. His sermon will include a tribute to Hassan Nasrallah, further cementing Hezbollah's role as a key player in the regional power struggle.
