India Launches Fourth SSBN to Strengthen Nuclear Deterrence
Amid escalating security concerns in the Indo-Pacific, India has launched its fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), codenamed S4*, on October 16, 2024, at the Ship Building Center in Visakhapatnam. This comes shortly after the commissioning of INS Arighaat in August. The S4* represents India's enhanced focus on strengthening its sea-based deterrence against regional adversaries, especially China.
Equipped with K-4 nuclear missiles, with a range of 3,500 kilometers, the S4* carries upgraded technology compared to its predecessors. This advanced system, along with its indigenous design (nearly 75%), marks a significant milestone in India’s defense autonomy. The launch follows the recent inauguration of the Very Low Frequency Naval Station in Telangana, which will facilitate enhanced communication with India’s strategic naval assets.
India has prioritized nuclear submarines, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, as a counter to Chinese naval expansion. While conventional submarine construction is ongoing, including the Kalvari-class, the focus remains on strategic submarines to secure the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This launch marks the end of the Arihant-class SSBNs, with future submarines planned to carry longer-range missiles, ensuring India’s continued presence in regional security.
