Table of Contents

New Delhi: The Government of India has expressed deep concern over a rise in incidents targeting the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, including attacks on temples and religious leaders. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed Parliament that it is the responsibility of the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens, including minorities.

Key Incidents of Violence

Theft at Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple

In October, the Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in Satkhira’s Shyamnagar faced a significant security breach when a crown, gifted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021, was stolen. The theft occurred during daylight hours, raising questions about the temple's safety measures.

Mob Attacks on Temples in Chattogram

Recently, mobs targeted multiple Hindu temples in Chattogram, including the Lokonath Temple and Kali Mata Temple, following protests over the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. These attacks have sparked outrage and calls for stronger protections for religious minorities.

Arrest of Hindu Monk Sparks Protests

The detention of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent Hindu leader and former ISKCON official, has intensified tensions. Arrested on sedition charges, his detention has led to widespread protests in Rangpur and other regions. Demonstrators have demanded legal safeguards and the creation of a minority affairs ministry to ensure the rights of Hindu communities.

India’s Stand

India has called on Bangladesh to take immediate steps to safeguard minority rights and prevent such attacks. The Indian government has highlighted specific incidents of vandalism and urged Dhaka to honor its commitment to protecting all communities within its borders.

Challenges Facing Bangladesh

Since the exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the interim administration under Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus has struggled to maintain law and order. Reports of violence against minorities, including vandalism of Hindu-owned properties and temples, have drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations and the international community.

Looking Ahead

As tensions rise, India has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels. The recent incidents have strained bilateral relations, and New Delhi is urging Dhaka to take decisive action to restore confidence and protect minority communities.

The ongoing violence underscores the need for immediate intervention to address these challenges and ensure peace and security for all citizens.
