Hezbollah Drone Attack Targets Israeli Army Positions Using Explosive Drones

Table of Contents

Lebanon's Hezbollah initiated a significant drone attack on Israel on Thursday, July 4th. Israel has reported that a reservist officer was killed in the Golan Heights as a result of this Hezbollah drone attack.

The extensive rocket and drone attack on northern Israel by the Iran-backed militant group appears to be a retaliation for the killing of a senior commander the previous day.

The cross-border conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which began following the Gaza war, has been escalating over the past months, raising concerns about the potential for a full-scale war.

Hezbollah's Drone Attack Strategy

In a statement, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the launch of "explosive drones" at eight Israeli military positions "as part of the response to the attack and the assassination carried out by the enemy" in the Tyre area of southern Lebanon on Wednesday.

The group further elaborated that its fighters "carried out an aerial attack with a squadron of explosive drones" targeting Israeli bases across the border area, including the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the Iron Dome defense system successfully intercepted several of the missiles, and fighter jets along with ground-based air defense systems neutralized the majority of the drones.

According to the Times of Israel, the soldier who succumbed to the attack was identified as Major (res.) Itay Galea, 38, a deputy company commander in the Yiftah Reserve Armored Brigade's 8679th unit, hailing from Ramat Gan.

Israeli Response to Hezbollah's Drone Attack

In retaliation, the IDF conducted extensive airstrikes in southern Lebanon, deploying approximately 200 rockets and 20 explosive-laden drones. The Israeli military stated on Thursday that it targeted positions in southern Lebanon, asserting that Israeli forces were "striking launch posts in southern Lebanon" after "numerous projectiles and suspicious aerial targets crossed from Lebanon into Israeli territory." The majority of these threats were intercepted, though fires broke out in several areas of northern Israel as a result.
