Heavy Rainfall Batters Andhra, Telangana; Mumbai and Chennai on Edge as IMD Issues Alerts

Severe rainfall across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has resulted in devastating floods, causing the cancellation of over 140 trains and widespread infrastructure damage. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the region under high alert, with flooding severely affecting rail services between Kesamudram and Mahabubabad in Telangana. South Central Railway (SCR) has been forced to divert key routes, adding to the chaos.

To assist with rescue operations, 26 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed across the most affected areas. While the IMD predicts a slight reduction in rainfall intensity starting Monday, the situation remains dire for the residents of these two states.

Mumbai Struggles with Heavy Rainfall and Waterlogging

Mumbai continues to grapple with incessant rain, leading to severe waterlogging in various parts of the city. The IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours, accompanied by generally cloudy skies. Commuters are facing travel delays, with local train services running behind schedule due to waterlogged tracks.

The city’s drainage systems, overwhelmed by the downpour, are at their limits. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued warnings and is monitoring vulnerable areas for potential landslides and building collapses. Residents have been advised to limit non-essential travel as rescue teams remain on high alert to handle emergencies.

Chennai: Rains Disrupt Transport, Train Services Canceled

In Chennai, the heavy downpour has resulted in significant waterlogging, paralyzing parts of the city. The IMD has issued warnings for continued rainfall, further aggravating the situation. Train services have been hit hard, with the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Chennai announcing the cancellation of multiple services due to severe flooding on the tracks.

Public transport systems are also running at reduced frequencies, with commuters advised to expect delays. Schools are on high alert, with authorities keeping a close watch on weather conditions before making decisions on potential closures. Parents are encouraged to monitor updates from the Education Department.

Efforts to Manage the Crisis and Long-Term Implications

As rescue efforts continue in the wake of relentless rains, cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are dealing with the brunt of the monsoon season. While Cyclone ASNA is expected to weaken, the IMD has also put northeastern states like Assam and Meghalaya on alert for isolated heavy rainfall. In the coming days, the situation may stabilize, but residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant as emergency operations unfold.

The India Meteorological Department remains a critical source of real-time updates, helping authorities and residents prepare for any further escalation in weather conditions.
