Gautam Gambhir’s Strict Stance After Pune Loss: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Team Lose ‘Optional Training’ Privilege
Following India’s unexpected Test series defeat against New Zealand, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Indian cricket team management have implemented a strict new policy: players are now required to attend all scheduled training sessions. The move comes after India lost the first two Tests of the series, resulting in their first home Test series defeat in 12 years since the England tour in 2012.
Traditionally, optional training sessions allowed players, especially senior batsmen and pace bowlers, to limit their practice if needed. However, after the losses in the Pune Test, the team management has reportedly canceled this privilege for all players, including team veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.
According to a source quoted by Indian Express, “The team management has asked the players to be present for two days of practice on October 30 and 31. It’s compulsory, and no one can skip it.” This change indicates the management’s desire for a more disciplined and united approach as the team prepares for the upcoming Test in Mumbai.
Mandatory Training in Mumbai
The Indian team, now trailing New Zealand 0-2 in the series, faces a must-win situation in the third and final Test match to avoid a complete whitewash and maintain a strong position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. The team management, led by Gambhir, wants every player fully focused and engaged in all preparations.
Following the Pune Test, players were given a two-day break, during which senior members, including Kohli and Sharma, traveled with their families. The entire team, along with the support staff, is expected to reassemble in Mumbai by October 27 to prepare for the final match.
A New Era of Accountability?
The decision to remove the optional training privilege reflects a shift in India’s approach to accountability and discipline under Gambhir’s leadership. With the WTC standings in mind, the management is determined to optimize performance, addressing any lapses in focus or preparation that may have impacted the team’s recent outings.
India’s upcoming performance in Mumbai will not only be crucial for the Test series but will also impact their standing in the WTC, where they continue to be a strong contender.
