Flash Flooding Hits Herefordshire Amid Heavy Rain Warnings

Table of Contents

Parts of Herefordshire have been severely impacted by flash flooding following heavy rainfall. A Morrisons store in Ross-on-Wye was forced to close after water began pouring through its roof. Local council representative Ed O'Driscoll reported that some streets were inundated with knee-deep water.

In response to the situation, O'Driscoll has been distributing sandbags to residents, especially with the Met Office forecasting more heavy rain and thunderstorms over the weekend. The yellow weather warning encompasses areas across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Warwickshire, the West Midlands, and parts of Wales and southern England.

This latest deluge comes just two weeks after Shropshire experienced its heaviest rainfall in five decades, where a month's worth of rain fell within hours. Mary Dhonau, a flooding advocate from Ledbury, described the rainfall on Friday as "shocking" and the worst she has encountered in the area. “The rain started several hours ago and hasn’t let up,” she noted, urging residents to take precautions to safeguard their homes. Several roads in Ledbury have been closed by police due to flooding.

Morrisons is currently investigating the source of the leak in their store, with social media footage showing water cascading from the ceiling. The Met Office has cautioned drivers to expect challenging conditions and potential road closures, while some areas may remain dry despite the risk of sudden flooding.

The weather warning takes effect at 01:00 BST on Saturday and will remain in place until 23:59 on Sunday. Additionally, a separate yellow weather warning is active until 20:00 on Friday. The Met Office has warned of a slight chance of power outages and rapid flooding that could damage properties. They have indicated that while there is some uncertainty, scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated through the weekend, with the potential for intense storms bringing hail and frequent lightning.
