FAIMA Plans Hunger Strike for Justice in RG Kar Medical College Case
On October 9, 2024, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) will initiate a nationwide hunger strike, demanding justice for the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. This nationwide strike comes after two months of local protests in West Bengal, where junior doctors have been advocating for stricter safety measures and better working conditions.
FAIMA, working in collaboration with the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front, aims to bring national attention to the inadequate protection of medical workers. The hunger strike seeks to amplify the ongoing movement, which has already seen numerous demonstrations demanding justice for the deceased doctor. FAIMA President, Suvrankar Datta, urged healthcare professionals to participate, emphasizing the need for reforms to safeguard doctors from future incidents of violence and negligence.
The tragic incident in August has shaken the medical community, and the hunger strike is expected to put significant pressure on the authorities to take concrete actions.
