World Cup Qualifiers: Colombia Defeats Argentina, Brazil Falls to Paraguay
In the latest round of South American World Cup qualifiers, Colombia triumphed 2-1 over Argentina, while Brazil was upset by Paraguay in a 1-0 defeat.
Colombia's Sweet Revenge Over Argentina
After a disappointing loss in the Copa America final, Colombia bounced back with a stunning 2-1 victory over Argentina. The decisive goal came from a James Rodriguez penalty in the 60th minute. Colombia took the lead in the 25th minute through Yerson Mosquera, but Argentina equalized early in the second half with a goal from Nicolas Gonzalez. A controversial VAR decision awarded Colombia a penalty, which Rodriguez calmly converted.
The win moved Colombia to second place in the standings with 16 points, just two points behind Argentina.
Brazil's Shock Defeat
Brazil suffered a rare loss, going down 1-0 to Paraguay. Diego Gomez scored the only goal of the match with a long-range effort that hit the post before finding the back of the net. Brazil’s unconvincing performance leaves them in fifth place, while Paraguay climbs to seventh with nine points.
Chile’s Qualification Woes
Chile continues to struggle in the qualifiers, falling 2-1 to Bolivia. The loss leaves Chile in ninth place, making their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup increasingly slim. Bolivia’s goals came from Carmelo Algaranaz and Miguel Terceros, propelling them into eighth place.
Ecuador Boosts Their Chances
A 1-0 win for Ecuador over Peru keeps them firmly in the race for qualification. Enner Valencia's goal secured the win, lifting Ecuador to fourth place in the standings. Peru, on the other hand, remains last with just three points.
