Torrential Rains and Cloudbursts Devastate Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh has been reeling under severe weather conditions with multiple cloudbursts causing significant damage and loss of life. The recent events have left a trail of destruction, particularly in the districts of Shimla, Kullu, and Mandi.

Heavy Casualties and Missing Persons

The cloudburst in the Samej Khad area of Shimla has been particularly devastating, resulting in the death of two individuals and leaving approximately 50 people missing. The Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has been closely monitoring the situation and has called for extensive rescue operations involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the local police. The operation is further challenged by the severe damage to roads and infrastructure, which has hampered access to the affected areas.

Flash Floods and Structural Damage

In Kullu, a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst washed away a footbridge and three temporary shops in the Tosh area of Manikaran. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported, but the incident highlights the precarious situation in the region. The Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, Torul S Raveesh, emphasized the prohibition of construction near nallahs during the monsoon and urged people to stay away from rivers and streams.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In addition to Shimla and Kullu, Mandi district also faced a cloudburst near Tikkan Thalukot village, resulting in one death and nine missing persons. The severe weather has caused extensive damage to houses, roads, and hydro power projects across the state. Rescue operations are in full swing, with drones being utilized to locate the missing individuals.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the region, predicting continued heavy rainfall and potential landslides. This has led to the closure of educational institutions in the affected areas as a precautionary measure.

Government Response and Ongoing Alerts

The state government has been proactive in its response, seeking assistance from the Army and Air Force. Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi confirmed the extensive damage caused by the heavy rains and cloudbursts, including the destruction of motorable bridges and the significant impact on the apple crop, a vital part of the local economy.

The situation remains critical as the state braces for further rainfall and potential natural disasters. The IMD has warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and traffic disruptions due to waterlogging, urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The regional Met office has predicted that the wet spell could last until August 6, further compounding the challenges faced by the rescue teams and the local administration.
