Chennai IAF Air Show Ends in Tragedy: Five Dead Due to Heatstroke

The Indian Air Force's much-anticipated air show at Chennai’s Marina Beach, which drew massive crowds, ended in sorrow as five attendees died of heatstroke on October 6, 2024. The air show featured iconic performances by the Suryakiran and Sarang aerobatics teams, and was part of the IAF's 92nd anniversary celebrations. Thousands thronged the beach from early morning, excited to witness the aerial spectacle.

However, extreme heat became a serious issue as temperatures soared throughout the event. Despite advisories for attendees to come prepared with water and umbrellas, many were caught off-guard by the sweltering conditions. Over 100 people were treated for heat-related symptoms at local hospitals, with five confirmed fatalities. Medical professionals indicated that heatstroke, potentially worsened by pre-existing health conditions, was the primary cause of death.

Local authorities faced criticism for failing to provide sufficient amenities, especially drinking water, to cope with the vast number of spectators. In the aftermath, traffic gridlocks and public transportation failures further compounded the difficulties for attendees trying to return home. While the IAF performances wowed the audience, the tragic deaths have raised concerns about future safety preparations for such large-scale events.
