Boston College Dominates FSU Football in Embarrassing 28-13 Loss
FSU football fans left Doak Campbell Stadium disappointed on Monday night as the team was handed a shocking 28-13 defeat by Boston College in their home opener. The Seminoles, who were expected to put up a strong fight to achieve their season goals, failed to deliver on either side of the ball.
Boston College Strikes Early and Exposes FSU’s Weaknesses
The first half set the tone for what was to be a dismal showing by FSU. The defense started on a positive note, forcing Boston College to punt on their opening drive after Treshaun Ward, a former FSU running back, dropped a wide-open pass that could have gone for a touchdown. However, FSU’s offense did little to capitalize on the defensive effort, going three and out on their first possession and running only six plays in the entire first quarter.
Boston College, seeing a weakness in FSU’s linebackers, repeatedly exploited them with wheel routes to Ward, resulting in touchdowns on consecutive drives. The defense couldn’t contain Boston College’s run game, allowing the Eagles to convert 6 of 9 third downs in the first half. Despite forcing a couple of punts, FSU’s offense struggled to get going, and missed opportunities in the red zone—most notably when DJ Uiagalelei overthrew a wide-open Darion Williamson—left the Seminoles trailing 14-6 at halftime.
Missed Chances and Costly Mistakes
The second half started with hope as FSU received the ball, but Mike Norvell’s decision to go for it on fourth and five at their own 45-yard line proved costly. Uiagalelei’s interception set up Boston College at FSU’s 7-yard line, leading to another touchdown and extending the lead to 21-6.
Despite a brief resurgence, with Uiagalelei throwing a touchdown pass to Kentron Poitier to narrow the score to 21-13, the momentum was short-lived. Boston College responded with an eight-play, clock-chewing drive that culminated in a touchdown, putting the game out of reach at 28-13 with just over a minute left in the third quarter.
A Long Road Ahead for FSU
The loss to Boston College was not just a defeat, but a wake-up call. The offensive line struggled to provide adequate protection for Uiagalelei, while the defensive line failed to slow down Boston College’s ground game. Uiagalelei himself had a rough outing, missing multiple open receivers, and Kyle Morlock’s dropped passes added to the frustration. The linebackers, a known weak point for FSU, were once again exposed, allowing Boston College to dictate the flow of the game with relative ease.
Mike Norvell now faces a crucial challenge: finding a way to get his team back on track. With the season’s expectations hanging in the balance, the team must regroup quickly or risk missing out on a bowl game.
