9 Injured in Stampede at Mumbai’s Bandra Railway Station Amid Diwali Rush
In a tragic incident, nine passengers were injured in a stampede at Bandra railway station in Mumbai early today. The stampede occurred as a large crowd gathered to board a train headed toward Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, amidst the pre-Diwali festive rush. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the injuries were largely due to crowd pressure as passengers scrambled to board the delayed train.
According to officials, the condition of seven passengers is stable, while two have suffered critical injuries and are undergoing treatment. The incident took place around 3:00 a.m. when Train No. 22921 from Bandra to Gorakhpur was delayed and later rescheduled for a 5:10 a.m. departure. A large crowd, already gathered on platform number 1, rushed to board the general compartment, which triggered the stampede.
Eyewitness Accounts and Visuals
Eyewitnesses reported seeing injured passengers lying on the floor, with some assisted by Railway Police and fellow passengers. Visuals from the scene showed bloodstains on the platform, and some passengers were seen being carried away on stretchers. One video captured a Railway police officer carrying an injured passenger on his shoulder, while other footage depicted passengers using makeshift stretchers fashioned from large cloths to help those hurt in the chaos.
One man was seen seated on a bench in visible pain, with his torn shirt suggesting the intensity of the situation. The BMC provided an update stating that the situation is now under control, and the injured have been taken to Mumbai's Bhabha Hospital. Among those affected, one passenger reportedly suffered a spinal fracture, while others sustained leg fractures. Two individuals have since been discharged from the hospital.
BMC and Railway Authorities on Alert
The BMC noted that festive rushes often increase crowd volume at railway stations, and additional measures may be implemented to manage such incidents more effectively.
The BMC has advised passengers to remain cautious during peak travel times to avoid further incidents during the festival period.
